The term stream of consciousness originated as a metaphor in psychology to denote the state of human consciousness, and that this state represents a continuous, uninterrupted flow, and is similar to the state of a river or a current. Consciousness arises in humans in early childhood. This term appeared at the hands of psychologists and philosophers, most notably William James. This trend had a wide echo in the Arab novel and literary criticism, which had a profound impact on Naguib Mahfouz’s novels in the late fifties and early sixties. The names of some novelists who became prominent figures in the history of realism emerged, such as Sanallah Ibrahim, Gamal al-Ghitani, and Youssef al-Qaid. Dr. Al-Saeed Al-Warqi believed that the works of these young men belong to what is known as the term progressive realism, and these writers were keen to present a new reality for humans, a mixture of myth and dream. The stream of consciousness, before reaching the stage of maturity known to literature, had beginnings and precursors, such as Jane Austen’s novel Emma, which was published in 1816, and Gertrude Stein’s novel Melancholy in 1909. Then a new generation known as the pioneers emerged, such as James Joyce. Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust, and others.
