Abstract

The current research aimed to clarify the role of diplomacy in resolving border disputes, taking from the Abyei problem a case study, the researcher traced the historical development of the emergence of the conflict over the Abyei region and its close connection with the emergence of oil in the Abyei region, the reasons for the emergence of this conflict and the role and influence of neighboring countries, especially Ethiopia and Egypt, in this conflict and its transformation in Many times from conflict to armed conflict, then the research dealt with the role of Western countries, especially the United States of America, and the impact of this role in settling the conflict between Sudan and South Sudan. Dinka Ngok of African descent, the research also dealt with the historical relations over time between the two main tribes in the Abyei region, the Misseriya tribe of Arab origin and the Dinka Ngok tribe of African origin.

The research followed the diplomatic means that were used to contain this conflict and how it affected the entire conflict between North and South Sudan, as well as the international decisions that were taken in order to resolve the conflict over this region between Sudan and South Sudan, and the reactions of the parties to the conflict to these international resolutions and what has been implemented on the ground.
