The "Istbdaa" marriage as one of the means to improve the Progeny in the Arabian Peninsula before Islam

Abstract

There were many types of marriage in the Arabian Peninsula before Islam, and they differed according to their purposes. Marriage occupies the first and important place among the endeavors by which the quality of Progeny is achieved. There are many special practices that are believed to have an effect on Progeny, such as selecting wives.



Marriage by Forced (Istbdaa) constitutes the most important phenomenon and the strongest argument with regard to the issue of eugenic improvement, and with the absence of sufficient evidence about this phenomenon, it was practiced in the Arabian Peninsula in the past, according to narratives and some few examples.



The reason for this type of marriage is that he was among the husbands who sought to improve his male Progeny, by transferring the characteristics of personalities that have the qualities of reason, courage, or lineage as a reason for seeking that his wife give birth to a son who bears these characteristics that exist in these personalities.

One of the most prominent forms of marriage indicating interest in improving offspring; Istibaa’ marriage, which is that the man pushes his wife to another man who has the characteristics that the souls aspire to, such as sovereignty, strength, chivalry and fame, so the wife goes to the model person who has been chosen, and empowers him with herself,
