Abstract

The research dealt with the study of how the British colonized Nigeria, where it was at first a journey to discover the western coast of Nigeria and work in the slave trade, and as for the economic motives that Britain wanted, namely obtaining raw materials and controlling Nigeria as well as the slave trade, especially the mineral resources, raw materials and mines available in Nigeria in abundance, Britain entered into a major conflict with France, the Netherlands and Portugal, in order to obtain African raw materials, and control Nigeria and other African regions, and Britain did Occupying northern Nigeria and then the south and tightening its control over Lagos and establishing a number of companies for it that operate in Nigeria. Nigeria has worked to implement its policy in the system of governance and administration, as it worked on Britain to appoint a ruler for the southern and northern protectorates, then appointed a deputy for each of the northern and southern directorates. In order to be able to collect taxes and obtain raw materials, and for the financial expenditures spent by the British authorities in Nigeria, and in addition to their desire to construct and maintain roads, transportation and other public works, the British authorities urged the population to pay financial contributions, and to provide the necessary manpower for that, and on the other hand it recruited many nationals forcibly in excavation, railways, roads, , and it also implemented a new type of cash and tax transactions.
