Urbanization is one of the important human phenomena that reflects the extent of human ability to exploit and develop natural and human resources appropriately. It also serves as a true mirror of the shape of society, its conditions, and its regulatory foundations in different periods. The interest in urban studies in Egypt has increased since the late twentieth century and the early twenty-first century, especially with the population growth and the resulting complexity of urban problems. The emergence of new issues has led to the deterioration of the urban condition in most Egyptian cities, to the point where urbanization, population, and urban services problems have become urgent issues requiring intervention from various governmental entities. This necessitates the development of different strategies for sustainable urban development that take into account the available resources for both the current and future generations. Studying urban development in different periods is a necessary introduction to understanding the geography of the present, as it sheds light on the current urban context and answers many specific questions about its interactions, dynamics, and growth in different stages.
