Abstract

Message summary :

Among those who wrote about grammatical criticism in the past is this man, Ibn al-Sayyid al-Batalyusi, a great grammarian for whom al-Qifti translated in Inbah al-Rawwat, Ibn Qadi Shahba in Classes of Grammarians and Linguists, and al-Suyuti in al-Baghiyah. He is one of the most famous scholars of Andalusia who excelled in various sciences, became well-versed in them, and became famous. In it, they wrote many books and letters. He is Abu Muhammad Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Al-Sayyid Al-Batalyusi. He was born in the year 444 AH in the city of Badajoz, which was a large city in Andalusia. ()

What concerns us is that Ibn al-Sayyid al-Batalyusi presented grammatical criticism of the Book of Sentences, which is considered one of the brief grammar books that were written in the first period of grammar’s life, but it is of great importance. Therefore, commentators devoted themselves to it, detailing what was most beautiful about it, using verses of the Qur’an and narrations from the words of the eloquent Arabs.

Anyone who notices Ibn al-Sayyid al-Batalyusi’s criticism finds it constructive, not destructive. Rather, he was subjected to grammatical criticism of this book, not an attack on its author, and not biased toward a specific group. This appears from the introduction to his book in which he pointed to the value of this book - The Book of Sentences.
