At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Egypt witnessed an unprecedented political and economic change. After the French left Egypt in 1801, Muhammad Ali Pasha took over the rule of Egypt in 1805. He took it upon himself to form the modern Egyptian state. He began implementing many political and economic projects, as he sought to extend his influence to Sudan and the Levant, while he fought wars in the Hijaz and Greece. He worked to stimulate internal and external trade to market agricultural and industrial products. Sudan, with its human, agricultural and industrial resources, had a share in Muhammad Ali Pasha's political and economic project, like other countries to which Muhammad Ali Pasha's influence extended, and in which he adopted the same economic policy. Sudan's economic resources were an integral part of Muhammad Ali Pasha's ambitions. The Pasha realized the economic importance of Sudan, represented by its human and natural resources, which appeared through the studies of many foreign scholars and travelers who visited Sudan in the late 18th century and early 19th century. This research shows that Muhammad Ali Pasha made the best use of Sudan and its resources, and even improved and cared for them and created new ones, all of which represents the political and economic role that Sudan played in serving Muhammad Ali Pasha's expansionist projects and ambitions.
