The importance of consumer protection has increased in the digital age with the massive expansion in the use of the Internet and electronic transactions, prompting governments to develop modern means and mechanisms to safeguard consumers' rights and interests. Government websites are considered among the most significant of these means, as they provide interactive and informational platforms that enable consumers to access services and information related to their rights and the available protection mechanisms. This theoretical foundational study aims to explore the role of governmental electronic websites in enhancing consumer protection by reviewing the relevant legal and regulatory frameworks, analyzing the functions and services provided by these websites, and assessing their effectiveness in raising consumer awareness and protecting them from illegal commercial practices.
The study relied on a descriptive analytical approach by reviewing related literature and previous studies, and analyzing the content of several government websites concerned with consumer protection. The study concluded that government websites play a pivotal role in promoting consumer awareness, providing complaint submission channels, reporting violations, and publishing laws and regulations that protect consumer rights. The results also indicated disparities in the level of electronic services provided among countries, which calls for the development of technical infrastructure, regular content updates, and enhanced interaction with the public to ensure effective protection.
The study recommends supporting governmental digital transformation efforts in the field of consumer protection and activating electronic communication tools to guarantee easy and effective access for consumers to information and services.
